SOUTH AFRICA
Johannesburg and Cape Town
Johannesburg is the commercial centre of not only South Africa, but
also neighbouring countries such as Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe,
Zambia and Namibia.
SIA has a daily B777 passenger service to Johannesburg while SIA Cargo
operates a twice-weekly B747-400 freighter service to the city. The
freighter service was launched on 6 July and runs on the Brussels-Johan-nesburg-Singapore
and Dallas-Brussels-Johannesburg-Singapore routes.
Cape Town came online in 1994 and now has three weekly services —
one service direct to/from Singapore and two services via Johannesburg.
South Africa’s exports consist mainly of auto parts (as major
brands of motor vehicles are manufactured at Port-Elizabeth and Pretoria),
dairy products and mining machinery.
Cape Town’s main exports are live seafood such as lobsters and
abalone, bound mainly for Beijing and Hong Kong.
SIA Cargo also carries most of the shipments of radioactive isotopes
to China used for the treatment of cancer patients.
Exports of wild animals such as rhinocerous, antelopes, giraffes and
zebras have seen a revival recently due to demands from China’s
many safari parks and zoos.
Our GSA for South Africa is Afro-Asian Travel Services (PTY) Ltd.
