Mumbai
Mumbai, the most populated city in India, boasts of the largest port
in western India and is home to key financial institutions and many
big Indian conglomerates. Since the early 1980’s, skills-intensive
industries such as engineering, diamond polishing, healthcare and
pharmaceuticals, chemicals and information technology have developed
there.
Mumbai also serves as a gateway for neighbouring cities like Pune,
Goa and Indore from where export commodities are sent by bonded trucks
to Mumbai for uplift by air to other destinations.
SIA started its Mumbai service in June 1971 with three weekly B707
flights. Today, Mumbai is served by twice-daily B777 passenger services
and twice-weekly B747-400 freighter services.
Important exports include fish, fruits, vegetables, cut flowers, engineering
goods, fabrics, finished leather, garments, auto spares, computer
spare parts, films, diamonds, jewellery, pharmaceuticals, vaccines
and chemicals. |
