Three charities in the Philippines will benefit from the donation of library books, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Embassy of the Republic of Singapore in Manila and Singapore Airlines Cargo.
The three beneficiaries are the Center of Excellence in Public Elementary Education (CENTEX) Foundation, Inc., ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc., and the Sa Aklat Sisikat Foundation, Inc.
The ceremonies to turnover a total of 750 books were held on 17 June 2009 at the Chancery of the Singapore Embassy at Fort Bonifacio. Ambassador A Selverajah, together with Singapore Airlines General Manager, Mr Clinton Tan, handed over the books to representatives of the Foundations.
The books will benefit the children and students assisted by the Foundations.
- Center of Excellence in Public Elementary Education (CENTEX).
This is a collaborative project between corporate funders, Ayala Foundation, the local or provincial government where the school is located, the Department of Education and volunteers. Its scope is to equip a graduate with the learning and study skills to confront the social challenges of Philippine society and the complex global society. CENTEX offers educational growth in the spiritual, psychological, intellectual, social and physical realms to safeguard the dignity of the child thus enabling him to be a fearless servant leader.
- Sa Aklat Sisikat Foundation.
Founded by Margarita Delgado and Lizzie Zobel, the Foundation seeks to promote the love and habit of reading in Filipino children. It is endorsed by the Department of Education and, besides providing training for public school teachers to implement reading programmes, the Foundation also secures children's books as additional resource materials for the sustainability of its reading programmes.
- ABS-CBN Foundation. It is the corporate philanthropy arm of ABS-CBN. The Foundation is engaged in the promotion of education by working with public schools and its teachers to produce educational programmes and teaching aids which would complement the programmes.
