Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh with its exciting history and rich culture known the world over as the city of mosques and muslin. As the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka has grown into a busy city of about ten million people with an area of about 1353 sq km. Having a happy blending of old and new architectural trends, Dhaka has been developing fast as a modern city and is throbbing with activities in all spheres of life. It is the centre of industrial, commercial, cultural, educational and political activities for Bangladesh. Most of foreign trade and investment is conducted with companies based here. Dhaka's energy and communications infrastructure is the most modern available in the country, and it accounts for much of Bangladesh's net GDP growth. Dhaka has also led the country's rise in the global IT industry, with a massive expansion in wireless communications, and the proliferation of electronics across the population

Singapore Airlines has been flying to Dhaka since October 1986.

Major Export Commodities: Readymade Garments, Leather & leather products, Perishables (fruits and fresh vegetables, live crabs), jute and jute goods, handicrafts, frozen seafoods, Pharmaceuticals etc.

Imports
Oil, edible oil, petroleum product, rice, wheat, seeds, fertilizer, yarn, capital goods, machinery, power generating machinery, scientific & medical equipment, iron & steel, motor vehicles, raw cotton, garment accessories, electronic communication devices, chemicals etc.

Market characteristics
A very large percentage of the air exports comprise of ad-hoc readymade garment shipments. Bulk of these shipments are initially planned to move by sea but due to delays in manufacturing are converted to airfreight at short notice. Due to the ad-hoc nature of the exports, forward sales & load planning is extremely difficult as even the shippers/forwarders are unable to provide realistic projections. Market selling rates also tend to fluctuate as the peak/lean seasons are not defined. The peak/lean periods are essentially created by the abundance or scarcity of these ad-hocs.

Ground Handling Information:
Biman Bangladesh Airlines Ltd. is providing Ground Handling facilities to all the Airport in Bangladesh since 4th January 1972. It is approved by the regulatory body, Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, as the sole Ground Handler in Bangladesh to handle all foreign carriers flights operating on commercial basis.
