Singapore Airlines Cargo is launching new services to South Africa today, with introduction of the Boeing 747-400 Mega Ark freighter to Johannesburg. The new, twice weekly service will, respectively operate in one direction between Brussels-Johannesburg-Singapore and Dallas-Brussels-Johannesburg-Singapore. The current freighter services from Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Dallas to Brussels are timed to connect with the new Johannesburg schedule.

This new capacity on the Johannesburg-Singapore route is in addition to the cargo capacity available on Singapore Airlines' existing daily passenger service between the two cities. Singapore Airlines also operates passenger service between Singapore and Cape Town three times a week. The airline first started services to South Africa in 1992.

"The launch of the new Singapore Airlines Cargo service linking South Africa with Europe, USA and Asia is an important step in the development of our freighter network. With strong traffic growth being experienced between these markets, we hope that these services will be beneficial to our customers and further stimulate trade." Said Mr Hwang Teng Aun, President of Singapore Airlines Cargo.

Cargo traffic flows into South Africa comprise largely of industrial parts, whilst automotive products, seafood and flowers make up a significant share of cargo traffic to Asia.

Singapore Airlines Cargo operates a fleet of fourteen Boeing 747-400 Mega Ark Freighters on a global network that extends to 70 cities in 36 countries. A further two aircraft of this type are due for delivery in September and December 2005 and in addition, the airline has orders for three Boeing 747-400 passenger to freighter conversions, which will delivered between 2007 and 2009. SIA Cargo markets the entire cargo capacity of the SIA passenger aircraft fleet on its worldwide network. SIA Cargo is a member of the WOW alliance and Cargo 2000.
