Mick Fountain, Chairman of Cargo 2000, welcomed SIA Cargo's
commitment, stating: "The airline is widely acknowledged
for the quality of its cargo services but it clearly believes
that becoming an active participant in Cargo 2000 provides
an opportunity for further improvement and to be part of implementing
the industry platform that has been endorsed by other major
carriers, international freight forwarders, ground handling
suppliers and, most importantly of all, shippers and consignees.
"Some companies in this industry believe they do not
need to be part of Cargo 2000 and that is their choice. Increasingly,
however, airlines and air cargo organisation of all sizes
are starting to understand the value of a true, customer-driven
industry standard that provides clear potential to grow revenue,
reduce operating costs and enhance their status."
"Cargo 2000 provides a common platform of service quality
and standards between the airline and forwarder. This common
platform is vital in driving efficiencies and improvements
for all participants in the supply chain." said Mr Hwang
Teng Aun, President of Singapore Airlines Cargo.
Cargo 2000 hopes the arrival of another major cargo airline
into its membership will encourage more freight forwarders
to look at joining the group as well as other leading carriers.
The group is taking its message out to key air cargo gateways
around the world in 2004 and events in Hong Kong, London,
Chicago and Amsterdam have already attracted audiences of
over 600 executives from across the industry. Further events
are scheduled, including one next month in Paris.
Cargo 2000 members are now certified at more than 250 locations
worldwide. One or more members are measuring service performance
in accordance with Cargo 2000's quality system in 70 cities
across the globe and across 4,000 individual tradelanes compared
to 400 a year ago.
The number of Master air waybills being measured by the group
is now 47,000 per month, equal to some 180,000 House waybills.
By the end of the year, Cargo 2000 members aim to be measuring
all cargo shipments to and from Amsterdam, Chicago, Frankfurt,
Hong Kong, London, Milan, Paris, Seoul, Singapore, Tokyo,
Toronto and Vienna.
Air cargo organisations that wish to find out more about
membership of Cargo 2000 should contact Ron Cesana, Project
Director, at: cesanar@iata.org
Note to editors:
Cargo 2000, an IATA Interest Group, brings together major
airlines and freight forwarders with the unique goal of implementing
a new quality management system for the worldwide air cargo
industry. Their objective is simple: to implement processes,
backed by industry specific standards, that are measurable
and supported by data, thereby improving the efficiency of
air cargo, enhancing customer service levels and reducing
operational costs.
Based on detailed customer research and with the assistance
of leading IT companies, the group has re-engineered the transportation
process from shipper to consignee through a "Master Operating
Plan". This Plan is at the heart of an industry-wide
process control and reporting system that in turn drives the
corrective action systems.
The key to the Master Operating Plan is the creation of a
unique "route map" for individual shipments, which
is then monitored and measured throughout the life cycle of
the shipment.
Implementation of the project is divided into three phases.
Phase 1 provides for post shipment audit of the airport-to-airport
movement at a master air waybill level. Once a booking is
made, a route map/plan is automatically created with a series
of checkpoints containing events and scheduled times for events
against which the movement is managed and measured. This enables
the system to alert the Cargo 2000 member to any exception
to the plan, allowing the relevant airline or forwarder to
pro-actively respond to customer expectations.
Phase 2 provides for interactive monitoring of the door-to-door
movement at house waybill level, while Phase 3 provides for
real-time management of the transportation channel at individual
piece level.
