SINGAPORE AIRLINES CARGO FLIGHTS TO AVOID CONFLICT ZONE (IRAQ SACNR 0103)
20/03/2003

Following the outbreak of hostilities in Iraq, Singapore Airlines Cargo (SIA Cargo) wishes to advise customers that it will continue normal operations to the greatest extent possible under the circumstances.

However, at all times, paramount consideration will be given to the safety and security of our staff and the security of our customers' shipments.

The closure of some Middle East airspace will result in diversions, longer flight times, and may require extra refuelling stops. SIA Cargo is also implementing a range of heightened security procedures. Customers may experience delays and extended processing times on some shipments. Nonetheless, SIA Cargo will take all possible steps to ensure customers' needs are fulfilled.

Given the increasing cost of security, insurance and related issues, SIA Cargo will levy a war surcharge* of US$0.25 per kg for all affected shipments. As the cost of aviation fuel has also risen significantly over the past few months, a separate fuel surcharge* of US$0.20 per kg has been levied since earlier this month.

SIA Cargo also expects the diversion of flights around the affected area to result in reduced capacity for bellyhold cargo on passenger aircraft. SIA Cargo will adjust freighter schedules in order to meet the shortfall in bellyhold capacity wherever possible.

In the event that changes to our flight schedules result in SIA Cargo being unable to meet its own internal standards for the handling of particular shipments (e.g. livestock, valuable or vulnerable goods), we will regrettably be forced to temporarily stop accepting such shipments.
